A Circuitous Route

by Rev. Lucinda Schersing, DD

The traffic is at a standstill and cars are backed for a goodly distance. Isn't it amazing how many will try to take a 'short cut' only to add miles to their journey?

Isn't that pretty much the way we all are with our path in life? We start out on our journey and often come to an obstacle or a fork in the road, where we must make a decision.

There is no 'right' or 'wrong' path. We are, each one of us, different people, with different paths, with the same destination. It is the journey that matters, not the route we take to get there.

There are those individuals that are perfectly happy to travel the well-trodden path, with few surprises. Then there are those that think they see a way around the obstacles that sometimes confront them. Often these trail blazers are the ones, that by taking the circuitous route often through a maze of tangles and thickets of briars, are often blessed with the rare and wondrous sight of an unexpected waterfall roaring down the side of a mountain or any number of equally wonderful experiences. They are the ones that add miles to their journey, and yet they wouldn't trade their 'short cut' experiences and discoveries for anything. These are the people that make the path smoother for those that follow.

Obstacles and things that are often overlooked by people in a hurry bless those that prefer to stay on the well-worn path. They are the ones that make the path smoother by their efforts by clearing a few stones that may block the path and creating a pile of stones, which in turn becomes a signpost for those that follow.

Perhaps the next time you are confronted with an opportunity to take a short cut, do so with a sense of adventure. You never know what wondrous things await you on the circuitous path. It is not the speed with which you travel your path, it is the experiences on the journey that really matter. Enjoy each one.
